Golf has 4 major tournaments: The Masters, The US Open, The Open Championship (formerly the British Open), and The PGA Championship. Every professional golfer is measured by the number of major wins.
The Players Championship, being held May 9th-14th, is the one tournament talked about as if it were a major. It has perhaps the finest field of 144 players in the world, on a great course, with 3 exciting finishing holes that can change the leader board in a flash. It is a great tournament to attend here at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach. So, let’s talk about a hassle-free way to attend and enjoy the tournament:
What to Consider Before You Attend The Players Championship…
Parking Passes, Cameras, Cell Phones, Sunscreen
- There are no parking passes sold at the gate. You must go online, buy and print your parking passes (pgatour.com/tournaments/the-players-championship/tickets/info-pages/parking.html) before you get in the car to attend the day’s festivities.
- There are no cameras or pets allowed on the course.
- Cell phones must be on silent.
- Don’t forget the sunscreen.
Food
- While you can bring food in a clear 1 gallon plastic bag (no beverages) there is great food fare at The Players. Local favorites like TacoLu, M Shack, Metro Dinner and more are available.
- If you arrive early, breakfast is not a big venue at the course. Eat breakfast before you arrive.
Scoping Out Your Course of Action at The Players
Where is your favorite player on the course?
When you walk through the gates, you can get a free tee time schedule for holes 1 and 10. Once you find the player you want to follow, look at their tee time and add 15-20 minutes per hole to figure out where your favorite player is when you arrive.
Where to Watch the Action at The Players Championship
Since the tournament has always been played at the TPC Stadium course, everyone has favorite spots to watch. Here are some great places:

Behind the 16th green
One can watch the action coming up on the reachable Par 5 16th hole as well as the tee shot for the infamous Par 3 17th.

Behind the tee box on 18
For 18, it is all about the tee shot. Will the golfer be aggressive and flirt with the water on the left to shorten the hole or be conservative and play to the right?

Behind the tee box on the 12th Hole
This year the 12th hole is a drivable par 4 with water to the left front of the green. A great risk/reward hole. This is again all about the tee shot.

Don’t forget the 5th
It is a great long par 4. The tee shot offers the option for the aggressive players to play over water and sand traps to have an easier second shot or be conservative and play over the water and take a longer 2nd shot. It also has the best volunteer marshals. I will be the “good looking” marshal there on Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday.
Some Additional Thoughts…
- While every day at a golf tournament is great, Thursday, May 11th, will be especially good.
144 players play from 7:00am to 7:00pm. The day is also the lightest day for spectators.
- Sunday, May 14th is Mother’s Day.
